The Police have arrested four women and a man, aged between 25 and 32, for their suspected involvement in a case of loanshark harassment.
On 7 May 2019, the Police received a report of loanshark harassment where the gate of a residential unit along Pasir Ris Street 51 was secured with a bicycle lock and loanshark-related graffiti were also found scrawled on the wall next to the unit.
Through ground enquiries and with the aid of images from police cameras, officers from Bedok Police Division established the identities of the suspects and arrested them on 9 May 2019. Three bicycle locks, one black marker pen and two mobile phones were seized.
Preliminary investigations revealed that the suspects are believed to be involved in similar cases reported island-wide.
Three of the women and one men will be charged in court on 11 May 2019 under the Moneylenders Act (Revised Edition 2010), while investigations against the remaining woman are ongoing. First time offenders found guilty of loanshark harassment shall be fined not less than $5,000 and not more than $50,000 with mandatory imprisonment of up to 5 years and mandatory caning of up to 6 strokes.
