Two Members Of The Public Presented With Public Spiritedness Awards And Four Organisations Presented With Community Partnership Awards

In a ceremony held at Clementi Police Division on 14 May 2019, two members of the public were commended for their public spiritedness, and staff from four organisations were commended for their strong community partnership with the Police.

Cases Commended for Public Spiritedness Awards

In the first case, on 8 February 2019, Ms Sitti Nahida had assisted the Police in a case of attempted theft from motor vehicles and mischief. Ms Sitti saw a man behaving suspiciously and trying to open the doors of vehicles at a carpark located along Commonwealth Drive. She immediately called the Police, provided useful information and description of the man, which led to his arrest.

In the second case, on 12 February 2019, a woman visited Overseas Chinese Banking Corporation (OCBC) in JEM shopping mall and requested to transfer $32,500 for a “security deposit” to process a parcel. Sensing that something was amiss, Mdm Chan Mee Lian, a customer service officer with OCBC, stopped the transaction and probed further. The woman revealed to Mdm Chan that she had already paid over $20,000 for a “customs fee” and “customs certificate” for the said parcel intended for her and that she was instructed by a man whom she had befriended on Facebook to transfer the monies. Mdm Chan informed the woman that she was likely a victim of an internet love scam and advised her to consult her family. The woman eventually lodged a police report.

Cases Commended for Community Partnership Awards

In the third case, in January 2019, Mr Johann Johari Nazir, an assistant operations executive with PSA Singapore, had assisted the Police in solving two cases of insulting the modesty of a woman. Mr Johann reviewed the closed-circuit television (CCTV) footage and conducted ground enquiries. He provided valuable leads to the Police which resulted in the arrest of the man suspected to be involved in the two cases.

In the fourth case, on 7 March 2019, Mr Ong Kok Keong, a security officer with Terusan Recreational Centre, had assisted the Police in apprehending a man for a case of theft which happened at the multi-purpose hall (MPH) of Terusan Recreational Centre. Following a police report on a case of theft, Mr Ong reviewed CCTV footage which captured a man taking the victim’s mobile phone while he was asleep at the MPH. He then stepped up patrol at Terusan Recreational Centre, and found the man in the MPH. He immediately alerted the Police which resulted in the arrest of the man.

In the fifth case, on 16 March 2019, Mr Tan Eng Hai, a security supervisor with Cassia @ Penjuru dormitory, had assisted the Police in apprehending three men for suspected drug-related offences. During his patrol at one of the dormitory block, Mr Tan was alert and spotted three men behaving suspiciously at the staircase landing. Mr Tan immediately informed the Police, which led to the arrest of the three men.

In the sixth case, on 16 March 2019, Mr Foo Kong Soon Sam and Mr Katiravan A/L Subrayam, security officers with International Merchandising Mart (IMM) building, had prevented a woman from committing suicide. Mr Foo and Mr Katiravan saw a woman seated on the ledge at level six of the IMM building carpark. After calling the Police for assistance, Mr Foo then tried to calm the woman while waiting for the Police to arrive. Mr Foo, with the assistance from Mr Katiravan, eventually managed to bring the woman to safety.

Assistant Commissioner of Police (AC) Jarrod Pereira, Commander of Clementi Police Division said, “These exemplary civilians did not turn a blind eye to wrongdoings occurring right before them, but instead, stepped up to make a difference. They have demonstrated commendable acts of kindness, valor and public spiritedness and we want to recognize these outstanding individuals.”
