The Police have arrested a 54-year-old man for his suspected involvement in a case of attempted housebreaking by day.

On 10 May 2019 at about 8.25am, the Police were alerted to a case of attempted housebreaking along Bukit Merah View. The victim reported that an unknown man had attempted to use an umbrella to fish out a mobile phone that was on his table, through the gate of the unit. The suspect reportedly fled after he was confronted by the victim.

Through ground enquiries and with the aid of images from police cameras, officers from Clementi Police Division established the identity of the man and arrested him on 15 May 2019.

The man will be charged in court on 17 May 2019 with attempted housebreaking by day under Section 454 read with Section 511 of the Penal Code, Chapter 224. If convicted, he can be jailed up to 3 years and fined.

The Police would like to advise all house owners to adopt the following crime prevention measures:

  • Do not leave valuables near windows or doors, which are within reach by outsiders;
  • Secure all doors, windows and other openings with good quality grilles and close-shackled padlocks when leaving your house unattended;
  • Refrain from keeping large sums of cash in your house; and
  • Install a burglar alarm and CCTVs, to cover the access points into your house. Ensure that they are tested periodically and in good working condition.
