The Police have arrested a 36-year-old man for his suspected involvement in transmitting false messages to the Police and Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) between June and July 2019.

Between 11 June 2019 to 20 July 2019, SCDF and the Police received at least four calls reporting about a fire or someone attempting to commit suicide at the vicinity of Chai Chee Road and Chai Chee Avenue.

Officers from Bedok Police Division and SCDF responded to these incidents and established that there was no fire or person in distress. Preliminary investigations revealed that the caller has made these calls from a public phone.

Through ground enquiries, officers from Bedok Police Division established the identity of the man and arrested him on 23 July 2019.

Investigations are ongoing. Anyone convicted for transmitting false message under Section 45(b) of the Telecommunications Act, Chapter 323, shall be punished with a fine not exceeding $10,000, or to imprisonment for a term not exceeding 3 years or to both.
