In a ceremony held at Ang Mo Kio Police Division on 25 November 2019, nine members of the public were commended for their public-spiritedness and two organisations were commended for partnering the Police in the fight against scams.
Three employees of 7-Eleven were presented with the Public-Spiritedness Award for preventing three customers from being scammed. Ms Tong Ke Xin from the convenience store at Compass One Shopping Centre had intercepted a scam victim who wanted to purchase Razer Gold cards worth $150 on 5 October 2019. Ms Rehana Binte Abdul Qadir from the convenience store at Punggol Settlement had intercepted a scam victim who wanted to purchase iTunes gift cards worth $2000 on 10 October 2019. Ms Laureta Maricris Casicas from the convenience store at Blk 318B Anchorvale Link had intercepted a scam victim who wanted to purchase iTunes gift cards worth $2500 on 15 October 2019.
Three employees of Cheers convenience store at Ang Mo Kio MRT Station were presented with the Public-Spiritedness Award for preventing two customers from being scammed on 8 and 19 September 2019. Ms Parisa Begum, Ms Siti Hawa Bte Mohd Mohd Sa and Ms Adeline Seet noticed that the customers were behaving nervously while trying to purchase iTunes gift cards, and engaged the customers to inform that they were likely victims of scams. They called for Police and prevented the two customers from being cheated of $700 in total.
Ms Yap, the sales promoter of Remax outlet at Compass One Shopping Centre, was presented with the Public-Spiritedness Award had detected a shoplifter and alerted the Police. Ms Yap had applied the crime prevention skills, which she learnt during a training conducted by Ang Mo Kio Police Division and assisted the Police in detaining the suspect who was established to be a serial shoplifter.
Separately, Ms Sheila Chow and Ms Ng Chia Ching, who are both staff of OCBC Bank (NEX Branch), were presented with the Public-Spiritedness Award for preventing a customer from transferring money to a scammer. On 26 September 2019, Ms Chow attended to the female customer who requested to transfer $1500 to an account, claiming that it was to pay for a parcel clearance fee. The customer had shared that the parcel was a gift from a male friend whom she had befriended online. Sensing that this could be a parcel scam, Ms Chow and Ms Ng advised the customer to stop the transaction and report the matter to the Police.
The Police have been collaborating with our community partners to prevent and detect scams. This includes conducting training on how to detect scams to the employees of organisations like 7-Eleven and NTUC Fairprice Co-Operative Limited. To recognise the strong support in the fight against scams, Ang Mo Kio Police Division presented the Community Partnership Award to 7-Eleven and NTUC Fairprice Co-Operative Limited.
Assistant Commissioner of Police (AC) Zhang Weihan, Commander of Ang Mo Kio Police Division, said: “Today, we are pleased to present these awards to the nine individuals for their public-spirited interventions in rendering assistance to police officers and members of the public who were in need. We are heartened by how our community partners have aligned their interests with us, lending their support through their staff and helping the Police prevent crimes. It is through such cooperation that we can build a safer home for all of us.”
