The Police have arrested a 30-year-old man for mischief by fire.

On 13 March 2020 at about 11.10pm, the Police were alerted to a case of fire at Blk 105 Towner Road. Investigations revealed that the man set fire to a few bags of clothes using petrol/diesel in front of Kallang Neighbourhood Police Post (NPP) and smashed the glass door of the NPP.

The man was detained by Police officers at the scene. No one was injured. He will be remanded for further investigations and the Police will seek a court order to send him for psychiatric assessment.

Although he had scribbled the words “ISIS” on the pillars near the NPP, preliminary investigations indicated that he acted alone and it was not terrorism related, but the act of a disgruntled person unhappy with perceived social inequality.

The man will be charged in court on 14 March 2020 for mischief by fire under Section 435 of the Penal Code, Chapter 224. The offence of mischief by fire carries a punishment with imprisonment of up to 7 years, and a fine.
