Man Arrested Within Three Days For Housebreaking And Mischief By Fire

The Police have arrested a 52-year-old man for his suspected involvement in a case of housebreaking and mischief by fire.

On 6 April 2020, the Police received a report that a coffeeshop along Macpherson Lane was broken into and set on fire. Cash amounting to about $2,600 was reported stolen.

Through ground enquiries and with the aid of CCTV images, officers from Bedok Police Division established the identity of the man and arrested him on 8 April 2020.

The man will be charged in court on 9 April 2020 with housebreaking under Section 451 of the Penal Code, Chapter 224. The offence of housebreaking carries a maximum imprisonment term of 10 years, and a fine. The offence for mischief by fire, under Section 435 of the Penal Code, carries a maximum imprisonment term of 7 years and a fine.

Assistant Commissioner of Police Julius Lim, Commander of Bedok Police Division, said, “At a time when more businesses are shuttered due to the Covid- 19 situation, break-ins like this are particularly egregious. I am proud of the diligence and determination displayed by the Bedok Police Division officers. The Police have stepped up our crime-fighting efforts, during the circuit breaker period.”

The Police would like to advise the public to adopt the following crime prevention measures:

  • Secure all doors, roller shutters, windows and other openings properly before leaving your premises unattended, even for a short while; and
  • Refrain from keeping large sums of cash at commercial premises.
