The Police have arrested a 34-year-old man and a 26-year-old woman for their suspected involvement in a case of loanshark harassment.

On 15 April 2020 at about 6.15am, the Police received a report of loanshark harassment at a residential unit along New Upper Changi Road, where the metal gate was secured with bicycle lock with a debtor’s note and a Grab bag left behind at the door.

Through investigations and with the aid of images from police cameras, officers from Bedok Police Division established the identities of the duo and arrested them on 20 April 2020. One mobile phone, a marker and a piece of paper were seized as case exhibits.

Police investigations are ongoing against the woman. The man will be charged in court on 22 April 2020 under the Moneylenders Act (2010 Revised Edition). The offence of loanshark harassment carries a fine of not less than $5,000 and not more than $50,000, and mandatory imprisonment of up to 5 years and mandatory caning of up to 6 strokes.

The Police have zero tolerance for loanshark harassment activities. Those who deliberately vandalise properties and cause annoyance and disruptions to public sense of safety, peace and security will be arrested and dealt with severely in accordance with the law.

Members of the public are advised to stay away from loansharks and not to work with or assist the loansharks in any way. The public can call the Police at ‘999’ or the X-Ah Long hotline at 1800-924-5664 if they suspect or know of anyone who could be involved in loansharking activities.
