Eight Men And One Woman Involved In Rioting With Deadly Weapons Case Arrested In Police Manhunt Operations

The Police have arrested another eight men and one woman in connection to a case of rioting with deadly weapons between two groups at People’s Park Centre along Upper Cross Street which happened on 10 May 2020 at about 3.30am. These are in addition to the three men arrested at scene the same day.

Between 10 and 12 May 2020, officers from the Criminal Investigation Department, Police Intelligence Department and Central Police Division conducted several island-wide raids and arrested another eight men and one woman, aged between 18 and 28, for being members of an unlawful society, unlawful assembly and rioting armed with deadly weapons. Preliminary investigations revealed that the incident arose from a relationship dispute between a member of each group over a woman. The offence of rioting armed with deadly weapons punishable under Section 148 of the Penal Code carries an imprisonment term of up to 10 years, and caning. The offence of unlawful assembly punishable under Section 143 of the Penal Code, carries an imprisonment term of up to 2 years, or with fine, or both. The offence of being a member of an unlawful society punishable under Section 14(3) of the Societies Act carries an imprisonment of up to 3 years, or a fine of up to $5,000, or both.

Police are also investigating one of the men for harbouring another two of the arrested men. The Police would like to remind the public that harbouring fugitives is a serious offence punishable with imprisonment and fine. All of the arrested persons will also be investigated for breach of safe distancing measures under the COVID-19 (Temporary Measures) (Control Order) Regulations 2020. We urge the public to take the circuit breaker measures seriously and comply with the safe distancing measures.
