The Police have arrested a 24-year-old man for his suspected involvement in using counterfeit S$100 Portrait series notes.

On 26 May 2020, the Police received a report from a victim that he received three counterfeit S$100 Portrait series notes from a buyer as payment for some slimming products.

Through investigations, officers from the Commercial Affairs Department established the identity of the man and arrested him on 28 May 2020. Preliminary investigations revealed that the man is believed to be involved in another similar case on 27 May 2020. Eight S$100 notes which are believed to be counterfeits were seized as case exhibits.

The man will be charged in court on 30 May 2019 with using as genuine counterfeit currency notes under Section 489B of the Penal Code, Chapter 224. The offence carries an imprisonment term of up to 20 years and fined.

The Police take a serious view against any person who may be involved in using as genuine counterfeit currency notes and the perpetrators will be dealt with in accordance with the law.

Members of the public are reminded to be vigilant and to examine any money that you may receive by checking for common security features. The Police would also like to remind members of the public to be wary of receiving possible counterfeit notes. If you have received any suspected counterfeit currency note, you should:

  • Delay the person(s) who presented the suspected counterfeit note, if possible, and call the Police at ‘999’ immediately;
  • Note the description of the person(s) who presented the counterfeit note, including gender, race, age, height, built, clothing, tattoo and language/dialect spoken;
  • Note the description of the vehicle used, if any, including its registration number; and
  • Limit the handling of the suspected counterfeit note and place it in a protective covering, such as an envelope, to prevent further tampering. Hand it over to the Police immediately.
