The Police have arrested eight men aged between 16 and 25 and two women aged 16 and 25, for their suspected involvement in a case of dangerous riding.
On 13 July 2020, the Police were alerted to a video showing a group of riders on personal mobility devices (PMDs) and power-assisted bicycles (PABs) travelling together with a motorcyclist along Sheares Avenue. Following investigations, officers from the Traffic Police established the identities of the persons involved and arrested them between 17 and 20 July 2020. Two PMDs, device parts of a PAB and mobile phones were seized.
The Police and the Land Transport Authority are conducting investigations into offences of dangerous riding and riding a personal mobility device on a road, amongst others.
- Under section 64(1) of the Road Traffic Act, Chapter 276, the offence of dangerous riding carries an imprisonment term of up to 12 months, or a fine of up to $5,000, or both. In the case of a second or subsequent conviction, the offence carries an imprisonment term of up to 2 years, or a fine of up to $10,000, or both.
- Under section 5A(1) of the Road Traffic Act, Chapter 276, the offence for riding a personal mobility device on a road carries an imprisonment term of up to 3 months, or a fine of up to $2,000, or both. In the case of a second or subsequent conviction, the offence carries an imprisonment term of up to 6 months, or a fine of up to $5,000, or both.
All road users are advised to abide strictly with traffic rules and regulations. The Traffic Police and Land Transport Authority will not hesitate to take tough enforcement action against road users and active mobility device users who choose to flout traffic rules and endanger the safety of others.
