The Police have arrested a 49-year-old man for public nuisance.
On 12 August 2020, the Police received a report lodged by an SBS Transit bus captain that a male passenger had failed to wear his mask properly and had scolded him with vulgarities.
Through ground enquiries and with the aid of images from police cameras, officers from Ang Mo Kio Police Division established the identity of the man and arrested him on 20 August 2020. Preliminary investigations revealed that the man is also suspected to be involved in a separate incident where he had allegedly spat at a SBS Transit bus captain after he was asked to wear his mask properly.
The man will be charged in court on 22 August 2020 with public nuisance. The offence of public nuisance under Section 290 of the Penal Code carries a fine which may extend to $2,000. If the act will cause or will probably cause any common injury, danger or annoyance to the public, or to the people in general who dwell or occupy property in the vicinity, it carries an imprisonment term which may extend to three months, or a fine which may extend to $2,000, or both.
The Police take a serious view of such abusive and irresponsible behaviour, especially in the current COVID-19 situation. Everyone needs to play their part by being socially responsible, observing good personal hygiene, and being considerate to others, especially to service staff who continue to serve the public to the best of their efforts during this difficult period. The Police will not tolerate any physical or verbal abuse of public servants or public service workers, and will take strong action against perpetrators.
