The Police have arrested 17 men, aged between 57 and 79, during an enforcement operation conducted by Ang Mo Kio Police Division along Serangoon Ave 3 on 23 August 2020.
15 men, aged between 57 and 79, were arrested for illegal betting. Two men, aged 60 and 61, were arrested for receiving lottery bets using remote communication. The 61-year-old man was also arrested for using criminal force against a public servant during the operation. 13 handphones and betting paraphernalia were seized.
Police investigations are ongoing.
Under Section 5(1) of the Betting Act, any person who bets with a bookmaker shall be liable on conviction, to a fine not exceeding $5,000, or to imprisonment for a term not exceeding six months, or both.
Under Section 9(a)(ii) of the Remote Gambling Act, any person who receives bets using remote communication shall be liable on conviction, to a fine of not less than $20,000 and not more than $200,000, or to imprisonment for a term not exceeding five years, or both.
The Police will continue to clamp down on criminal activities, including illegal betting. Those found engaging in illicit activities will be dealt with sternly in accordance with the law.
