Man Arrested For Dangerous Driving And Possession Of Offensive Weapon

The Police have arrested a 26-year-old man on 24 August 2020 for his suspected involvement in a case of dangerous driving and possession of an offensive weapon.

On 23 August 2020 at 2.29am, during a joint operation by the Traffic Police (TP) and the Land Transport Authority at Connaught Drive, a car was observed to have gone against the flow of traffic. The TP officers signalled to the driver to stop, but he drove past them and sped off. The officers then gave chase in their vehicle. The car subsequently hit the traffic light at the junction of Palmer Road and Shenton Way and crashed into the pillar of a nearby building before coming to a stop. The driver then abandoned his car and fled on foot. No injuries were reported. A knife and suspected drug paraphernalia were found in the car. With the aid of images from police cameras and ground enquiries, TP officers established the identity of the driver.

The man was arrested by the Police along Niven Road on 24 August 2020. Police investigations are ongoing.

Under Section 64(1) of the Road Traffic Act, the offence of dangerous driving carries a jail term of up to 12 months, a fine of up to $5,000, or both. In the case of a second or subsequent conviction, the offence carries a jail term of up to 2 years, a fine of up to $10,000, or both. Under Corrosive and Explosive Substances and Offensive Act, the offence of carrying offensive weapons in public places carries a jail term not exceeding 3 years and shall also be punished with caning with not less than 6 strokes.

The Police take a serious view of anyone who disregard the traffic rules and endangers other road users, and will take strong action against offenders.
