19 Under Investigations Following An Enforcement Operation Against Illegal Betting Activities

15 men and 4 women, aged between 46 and 90, are assisting with investigations for their suspected involvement in illegal betting activities following an enforcement operation conducted by Clementi Police Division along Redhill Lane on 5 September 2020.

13 men and 3 women, aged between 58 and 90, are being investigated for offences under the Betting Act. The remaining three suspects, 2 men and 1 woman, aged between 46 and 65, are being investigated for offences under the Remote Gambling Act. Cash amounting to at least $6000 and gambling paraphernalia were seized.

Police investigations are ongoing.

Under Section 5(1) of the Betting Act, any person who bets with a bookmaker shall be liable upon conviction to a fine not exceeding $5,000, or to imprisonment for a term not exceeding six months, or both. Under Section 5(3) of the Betting Act, any person who is found to be involved in bookmaking shall be liable upon conviction to a fine of not less than $20,000 and not more than $200,000 and shall also be punished with imprisonment for a term not exceeding 5 years. Under Section 8(1) of the Remote Gambling Act, any person who bets using remote communication; or with a remote gambling service that is not provided by an exempt operator, shall be liable on conviction to a fine not exceeding $5,000 or imprisonment for term not exceeding six months or both.

The Police will continue to clamp down on criminal activities, including illegal betting. Those found engaging in illicit activities will be dealt with sternly in accordance with the law.
