Man Arrested For Voluntarily Causing Hurt To A Public Servant And Possession Of Scheduled Weapon

A 20-year-old man was arrested on 9 October 2020 for voluntarily causing hurt to deter a public servant from discharge of his duty and possession of scheduled weapon.

On 9 October 2020 at about 3.50am, officers from Central Police Division encountered the man at a lift lobby of Blk 6 Beach Road and conducted a spot check on him. The man carried a black sling bag and purportedly claimed it was empty when asked by the officers.  In response to the officers’ request for his particulars and identity document, the man purportedly attempted to flee and pulled out a knife from his bag. The officers disarmed him immediately and attempted to restrain him. However, the man purportedly punched one of the officers and fled the scene. The officers pursued the man and subsequently arrested him at a residential unit in the same block about an hour later. The knife was seized as case exhibit. One of the officers sustained injuries on his face.

The offence of voluntarily causing hurt to deter a public servant from discharge of his duty under Section 332 of the Penal Code carries an imprisonment term of up to 7 years, and a fine or caning. The offence of possession of scheduled weapon under Section 7(1) (a) of the Corrosive and Explosive Substances and Offensive Weapons Act carries an imprisonment term not exceeding 5 years, and caning of not less than 6 strokes.

The Police have zero tolerance towards such brazen acts which threatens the safety of our officers and will not hesitate to take action against those who blatantly disregard the law.
