Eight Persons Under Investigations For Unauthorised Transactions Using A Stolen Credit Card

The Police have arrested a 47-year-old woman and three male teenagers, aged 17 and 18, for their suspected involvement in using a stolen credit card to make unauthorised transactions amounting to more than $15,000. Another two male and two female teenagers, aged between 13 and 17, are also assisting with investigations for their suspected involvement in the case.

On 21 September 2020, the Police received a report from a victim who discovered that several unauthorised transactions were made with his missing credit card.

Through investigations, officers from the Commercial Affairs Department established the identities of the woman and the seven teenagers who are suspected to be involved in the case.

Preliminary investigations revealed that a 14-year-old male teenager is believed to have stolen the credit card from the victim. Thereafter, the woman and the seven teenagers are suspected to have used it to make unauthorised transactions. An assortment of apparels, beauty care products, an e-scooter, a purse and watches were seized.

The woman will be charged in court on 19 October 2020 with abetment by conspiracy to cheat under Section 420 read with Section 109 of the Penal Code, Chapter 224. The offence of cheating carries an imprisonment term which may extend to 10 years, and a fine. Investigations against the seven teenagers are ongoing.

The Police would like to remind members of the public that unauthorised use of another person’s credit/debit card is a serious offence. Credit/debit card holders are advised to adopt the following crime prevention measures:

  • Keep your credit or debit cards safe with you at all times;

  • Call your card issuing banks immediately if your credit or debit cards are lost or stolen;
