The Police have arrested a 22-year-old man for his suspected involvement in using credit card details belonging to others, to make unauthorised purchases with online merchants.

On 4 October 2020 at about 5.50pm, the Police received a report from a victim who discovered that more than 30 unauthorised credit card transactions were allegedly made between 17 September 2020 to 3 October 2020. The purchases were made mostly for food deliveries costing more than $2,000 in total.

Through investigations and ground enquiries, officers from Tanglin Police Division established the identity of the man and arrested him on 23 October 2020. Further investigations revealed that the man is believed to be involved in other similar cases.

The man will be charged in court on 24 October 2020 with cheating under Section 420 of the Penal Code. Anyone convicted of cheating shall be punished with an imprisonment term, which may extend to 10 years, and shall also be liable to a fine.

The Police would like to advise all credit / debit card holders to adopt the following measures to prevent unauthorised use of their cards:

  1. Opt for SMS OTP verification for purchases or charges to your credit / debit cards;

  2. Opt for an SMS to be sent to your handphone for any charges incurred on your credit / debit card;

Check the bank statements and alert the bank immediately should there be any discrepancies or fraudulent charges.
