The Police have arrested a 24-year-old man for his suspected involvement in using credit card details belonging to others to make unauthorised purchase at cafes and convenience store island wide.

On 22 October 2020, the Police received a report by victim who discovered that she has lost her credit card and there were several unauthorised credit card charges.

Through investigations and with the aid of images from CCTV, officers from Clementi Police Division established the identity of the man and arrested him on 29 October 2020. Police investigations are ongoing.

The offence of cheating under Section 420 of the Penal Code, Chapter 224 carries an imprisonment term of up to 10 years and a fine.

The Police would like to advise all credit / debit card holders to adopt the following measures to prevent unauthorised use of their cards: 

  1. Opt for SMS OTP verification for purchases or charges to your credit / debit cards;

  2. Opt for an SMS to be sent to your handphone for any charges incurred on your credit / debit card;

  3. Inform the card-issuing bank immediately when you discover the loss of your credit or debit card; and

  4. Check the bank statements and alert the bank immediately should there be any discrepancies or fraudulent charges.
