Deepavali festivities this year will take place amid strict COVID-19 precautionary measures and heavy vehicular traffic is expected along Serangoon Road during this period, especially on the eve of Deepavali on 13 November 2020.
Auxiliary police officers will be deployed along the affected roads and junctions to regulate traffic. Motorists are advised to make alternative travel arrangements and drive with caution. Strict enforcement action will also be taken against illegal parking.
The Police would like to advise the public to remain vigilant against crime by adopting the following measures:
- Do not leave your belongings unattended;
- Be cautious of strangers when approached;
- Avoid wearing excessive jewellery and carrying large amounts of cash;
- If you are molested, seek help immediately from passers-by to increase the chances of apprehending the culprit. Call ‘999’ as soon as possible.
- Report any suspicious persons and activities to the Police by calling 999 or SMS to 71999 if it is unsafe to talk; and
- Dial ‘999’ for urgent assistance.
- Please refrain from setting off improvised explosive devices constructed using sparklers. Such acts and devices are potential fire hazards which cause undue danger and alarm to the public. Anyone caught setting off improvised explosive devices is liable to an offence of negligent conduct with respect to explosive substances under Section 286 of the Penal Code, Chapter 224, punishable by imprisonment of one year or fine up to $5,000. Should the act lead to any hurt caused, one may be liable to prosecution for voluntarily causing hurt with heated or explosive substances under Section 324 of the Penal Code. If convicted, the offender will be liable to an imprisonment term which may extend to 7 years, or with fine, or with caning, or with any combination of such punishments.
Similarly, Police will take strict enforcement action against offenders who discharge fireworks illegally. Such illegal discharge of fireworks pose danger to the public and their properties. Illegal possession and discharge of fireworks is an offence under Section 3(1) of the Dangerous Fireworks Act, Chapter 72, punishable by imprisonment for a term not exceeding 2 years or to a fine not exceeding $5,000, or both.
