The Police have arrested a 17-year-old male teenager and a 18-year-old female teenager for their suspected involvement in a case of cheating.

On 1 November 2020 at about 10.50pm, the Police received a report from a victim who informed that he was being harassed by a scammer impersonating as a police officer. The scammer allegedly claimed that the victim was being investigated for a criminal case and had purportedly requested for the victim to make a payment of $600 to avoid arrest. The scammer then allegedly lured the victim to sign up for another mobile line in exchange for cash incentives for the payment. Subsequently, the victim allegedly claimed to have received text messages from other random mobile numbers asking him to make payment.

Through follow-up investigations, officers from Bedok Police Division established the identity of the duo, who were suspected to be involved in cheating the victim, and arrested them on 11 November 2020. Preliminary investigations revealed that the duo are also believed to be involved in other cheating cases of similar nature.

Police investigations are ongoing. The offence of cheating under Section 420 of the Penal Code carries an imprisonment term for up to 10 years and a fine.
