22 Men Arrested Following An Enforcement Operation Against Illegal Horse Betting Activities

22 men, aged between 49 and 85, have been arrested for their suspected involvement in illegal horse betting activities during an enforcement operation conducted by Central Police Division along Smith Street, Bendemeer, New Market Street, King George’s Avenue and Keong Siak Road on 19 and 20 December 2020.

During the operation, cash amounting to more than $11,000 was seized. Police investigations are ongoing.

Under Section 5(1) of the Betting Act, any person who bets with a bookmaker shall be liable on conviction to a fine not exceeding $5,000, or to imprisonment for a term not exceeding six months, or both. Under Section 5(3) of the Betting Act, any person who acts as a bookmaker or for the purpose of book making or settling bets shall be liable on conviction to a fine not less than $20,000 and not more than $200,000, and shall also be punished with imprisonment for a term not exceeding five years.

The Police will continue to clamp down on criminal activities. Those found engaging in such activities will be dealt with sternly in accordance with the law.
