Seven Subjects Arrested For Suspected Involvement In Connection To The Case Of Rioting Armed With A Deadly Weapon At Eu Tong Sen Street

The Police have arrested another six men, aged between 22 and 33, and a 22-year-old woman for their suspected involvement in connection to the case of rioting armed with a deadly weapon which occurred along Eu Tong Sen Street on 19 December 2020 at about 10.40pm.

Between 20 and 21 December 2020, officers from the Criminal Investigation Department and Central Police Division conducted island-wide raids and arrested the seven subjects for various alleged offences in connection to the earlier case which occurred on 19 December 2020. The Police had charged four men in court on 21 December 2020 for the alleged offence of rioting armed with a deadly weapon under Section 148 of the Penal Code. Another 30-year-old man who was previously arrested on 20 December 2020 will be charged with voluntarily causing grievous hurt by dangerous means on 22 December 2020.

Following the latest arrests, four of the six men, aged between 22 and 33, will be charged in court for the offence of being a member of an unlawful assembly on 22 December 2020. The other two men, aged 26 and 31, will be charged for voluntarily causing grievous hurt by dangerous means and rioting with a deadly weapon respectively on 23 December 2020. Investigations against the 22-year-old woman are ongoing.

The offence of being a member of an unlawful assembly is punishable under Section 143 of the Penal Code which carries an imprisonment term of up to 2 years, or with fine, or both. The offence of voluntarily causing grievous hurt by dangerous means is punishable under Section 326 of the Penal Code which carries a life imprisonment or an imprisonment term of up to 15 years, and caning or fine. The offence of rioting with a deadly weapon is punishable under Section 148 of the Penal Code which carries an imprisonment term of up to 10 years and caning.

Police investigations are ongoing. The Police will spare no effort to apprehend such offenders and deal with them in accordance with the law.
