The Police have arrested a 35-year-old man and a 34-year-old woman for their suspected involvement in assisting loansharks in their business.
On 12 January 2021, the Police were alerted to a case of loanshark harassment along Pasir Ris Drive 4 where the victim received photos of his unit along with loanshark-related messages. Through investigations, officers from Bedok Police Division established the identity of the man and woman and arrested them on 13 January 2021.
Preliminary investigations revealed that the man had allegedly assisted loansharks by taking photos of the debtor’s unit while the woman was believed to have recommended the job to the man. One handphone was seized as case exhibit. Investigations are ongoing.
Under the Moneylenders Act (Revised Edition 2010), first time offenders found guilty of assisting in the business of unlicensed moneylending may be fined not less than $30,000 and not more than $300,000, be imprisoned for a term of up to four years and shall also be liable to be punished with caning of up to six strokes.
Members of the public are advised to stay away from loansharks and not work with or assist the loansharks in any way. Members of the public can call the Police at ‘999’ or the X-Ah Long hotline at 1800-924-5664 if they suspect or know of anyone who could be involved in illegal loansharking activities.
