The Police have arrested a 17-year-old teenager for his suspected involvement in a case of loanshark harassment.
On 17 January 2021, the Police were alerted to a case of loanshark harassment along Pasir Ris Street 51 where the victim allegedly received loanshark-related text messages along with photos of his residential unit.
Through investigations and with the aid of images from police cameras, officers from Bedok Police Division established the identity of the teenager and arrested him on 2 February 2021. Preliminary investigations revealed that the teenager had purportedly assisted unlicensed moneylenders by taking photos of the debtors’ residential units. The teenager is allegedly involved in other cases of loanshark harassment.
Investigations are ongoing. Under the Moneylenders Act 2010 (Revised Edition), the offence of loanshark harassment for first time offenders carries a fine of not less than $5,000 and not more than $50,000, with mandatory imprisonment of up to five years and mandatory caning of up to six strokes.
Members of the public are advised to stay away from loansharks and not work with or assist the loansharks in any way. Members of the public can call the Police at ‘999’ or the X-Ah Long hotline at 1800-924-5664 if they suspect or know of anyone who could be involved in loansharking activities.
