Five Arrested In Enforcement Operation Against Illegal Horse Betting Activities

The Police have arrested five men, aged between 28 and 73, for their suspected involvement in offences under the Betting Act. Two other men and one woman, aged between 68 and 78, will also be investigated for offences under the Betting Act.

On 3 March 2021, officers from Tanglin Police Division and Criminal Investigation Department conducted an enforcement operation against illegal horse betting activities along Whampoa Drive. Cash amounting to about $9200 and other gambling related paraphernalia were seized. Police investigations are ongoing.

Under Section 5(1) of the Betting Act, the offence of placing bets with a bookmaker carries a fine of up to $5,000, a jail term of up to six months, or both. The offence of being involved in bookmaking under Section 3(a) of the Betting Act carries a fine of not less than $20,000 and not more than $200,000, and a jail term of up to five years.

The Police will continue to clamp down on criminal activities. Those found engaging in illegal betting activities will be dealt with sternly in accordance with the law.
