Three Arrested For Cheating By Using Illegally Obtained Personal Information To Redeem Face Masks From Vending Machines

The Police are investigating against two men and a woman, aged between 31 and 42, for their suspected involvement in three separate cases of cheating by using illegally obtained personal information to collect face masks from vending machines put up by Temasek Foundation.

In the first case, the Police received a report on 4 March 2021, informing that a victim was unable to collect his face mask from a vending machine along Woodlands Drive 14. A check with Temasek Foundation revealed that the face mask had already been collected. Through investigations and with the aid of images from Police cameras and CCTV cameras on the vending machines, officers from Woodlands Police Division established the identity of the 41-year-old man and arrested him on 6 April 2021. The man had also purportedly used illegally obtained personal information to collect seven face masks from a vending machine located along Teck Whye Avenue.

In the second case, the Police received a report on 12 March 2021, informing that a victim was unable to collect her face mask from a vending machine along Ang Mo Kio Street 61; her mask had already been collected as well. Through investigations and with the aid of images from Police cameras and CCTV cameras on the vending machines, officers from Woodlands Police Division established the identity of the 31-year-old woman and arrested her on 7 April 2021. The woman had also purportedly used illegally obtained personal information to collect five face masks from a vending machine located along Pipit Road.

In the last case, the Police received a report on 4 March 2021, informing that a victim was unable to collect her face mask from a vending machine along Yishun Avenue 6; her mask had already been collected as well. Through investigations and with the aid of images from Police cameras and CCTV cameras on the vending machines, officers from Woodlands Police Division established the identity of the 42-year-old man and arrested him on 5 April 2021. The man had also purportedly used illegally obtained personal information to collect seven face masks from a vending machine located along Sembawang Drive.

Investigations into the three cases are ongoing. The offence of cheating under Section 420 of the Penal Code carries an imprisonment term which may extend to ten years, and includes a fine. The offence of retaining illegally obtained personal information, under Section 416A of the Penal Code carries an imprisonment term of up to three years, a fine of up to $10,000, or both.
