Man Arrested For Rash Act, Drug-Related Offences, Theft And Loanshark Harassment

The Police have arrested a 31-year-old man for his suspected involvement in a case of loanshark harassment, rash act and drug-related offences. The man was also wanted by the Police for theft and dangerous driving and by the Central Narcotics Bureau (CNB) for other drug-related offences.

On 28 May 2021 at about 3.40pm, the Police conducted an operation to apprehend the man in the vicinity of Block 469 Admiralty Drive, as he was suspected to be involved in a case of loanshark harassment at Haig Road on 23 May 2021. When the man realised that he was being followed by unmarked police vehicles, he attempted to escape in his vehicle. In the process, the man allegedly hit and damaged one of the unmarked police vehicles. No officers were injured.

The Police immediately mounted an island-wide operation to locate the man. His getaway vehicle was located in the vicinity of Block 222 Yishun Street 21. The man was subsequently arrested in a unit at Block 772 Woodlands Drive 60 for loanshark harassment, rash act, suspected drug-related offences and theft. Police investigations are ongoing. CNB is investigating into the drug related offences of the man.

The man will be charged in court on 29 May 2021 under the Moneylenders Act (Revised Edition 2010). For first-time offenders, the offence of loanshark harassment carries a fine of not less than $5,000 and not more than $50,000, with mandatory imprisonment of up to five years, and mandatory caning of up to six strokes.

The Police will not hesitate to take firm action against offenders who blatantly disregard the law and threaten the safety and security of our neighbourhoods.
