The Police have arrested a 36-year-old man for his suspected involvement in a series of cheating cases.

On 24 July 2021, the Police received a report that the man had allegedly pretended to be a gynaecologist from a hospital and invited the victim to join a campaign to raise awareness for women’s health. He purportedly created a Facebook user profile to represent himself as the purported gynaecologist and requested for the victim to provide nude photographs of her genitals under the pretext of medical diagnosis and research purposes.

Through follow-up investigations, officers from Tanglin Police Division established the identity of the man and arrested him on 11 November 2021. Preliminary investigations revealed that the man is believed to be involved in other similar cheating cases. The electronic devices used in the commission of the offence were seized as case exhibits.

The man will be charged in court on 13 November 2021 for the offence of cheating by personation under Section 419 of the Penal Code.  The offence carries an imprisonment term which may extend to five years, a fine, or both.

The Police would like to warn members of the public that it is a serious offence to impersonate another individual and will not hesitate to take action against those who blatantly disregard the law.

Members of the public are advised to adopt the following crime prevention measures:

  • Be wary of friend requests from unknown persons, as they may be for the purposes of perpetrating a scam.

  • Scammers may employ tactics to coerce victims into providing personal information or compromising images. Do not accede to such requests, especially if they come from persons unknown to you.
