Man To Be Charged For Alleged Offences Under Protection From Harassment Act And The Penal Code

A 31-year-old man will be charged in court on 19 January 2022 for alleged offences under the Protection from Harassment Act and the Penal Code.

On 3 November 2020 and 11 January 2021, the man had allegedly posted a series of Instagram Stories with threatening, abusive, and insulting remarks towards a Police officer who had been carrying out his duties.

On 13 November 2020, 23 February 2021 and 26 February 2021, the man had also allegedly made remarks on his Instagram and Facebook pages to wound the religious feelings of the Christian community.

For allegedly posting a series of Instagram Stories with threatening, abusive, and insulting remarks towards a Police officer, who is a public servant, in relation to the execution of his duty, the man will be charged with three offences punishable under Section 6(3) of the Protection from Harassment Act, which carries a fine of up to $5,000, imprisonment for a term of up to 12 months, or both.

For allegedly making remarks to wound the religious feelings of the Christian community, the man will be charged with an offence and two attempted offences of uttering words with deliberate intent to wound the religious feelings of any person under Section 298 of the Penal Code, which carries an imprisonment term of up to three years, or fine, or both.

The Police take a stern view of abusive behaviour against public servants who are carrying out their public duties. The Police also take a serious view of acts that can threaten religious harmony in Singapore. Any person who makes remarks that can cause ill-will and hostility against any religion will be dealt with firmly in accordance with the law.
