Police Arrested Another Five Men For The Case Of Voluntarily Causing Hurt With Dangerous Weapon At Commonwealth Avenue West

The Police have arrested another five men, aged between 22 and 40, for their suspected involvement in relation to a case of voluntarily causing hurt with dangerous weapon on 14 January 2022.

Background of incident

On 14 January 2022 at about 10.30am, the Police were alerted to an alleged stabbing incident at Blk 413 Commonwealth Avenue West. The victim was walking towards a multi-storey carpark when two men approached him. One of the two men, who was allegedly armed with a knife, purportedly attacked the victim from behind. Both men fled the scene thereafter. The victim sustained a slash wound on his left arm and a stab wound on his back and was conscious when conveyed to the hospital. Preliminary investigations revealed that this was a planned attack.

Through extensive ground enquiries and with the aid of images from Police and CCTV cameras, officers from Clementi Police Division established the identity of the two men and arrested them on the same day, within nine hours of the incident.

The two men were charged in court on 15 January 2022 with voluntarily causing hurt with a dangerous weapon with common intention, under Section 324 read with Section 34 of the Penal Code 1871. The offence carries an imprisonment term of up to seven years, or fine, or caning, or any combination of such punishments.

Five men arrested for abetting the commission of the offence

Through follow-up investigations by officers from Clementi Police Division, Criminal Investigation Department (CID) and Police Intelligence Department (PID), five more men, aged between 22 and 40, were subsequently arrested between 18 and 25 January 2022 for their suspected involvement in abetting the commission of the offence.

Of the five other men arrested, a 36-year-old man, allegedly paid for the victim to be hurt due to a business dispute. The remaining four men are believed to have played the roles of intermediaries in the armed attack.

Three of the men have been charged in court with the offence of abetment to voluntarily causing hurt with a dangerous weapon under Section 324 read with Section 109 of the Penal Code 1871. The offence carries an imprisonment term of up to seven years, or fine, or caning, or any combination of such punishments. The remaining two men are currently assisting in investigations.

Commander of Clementi Police Division, Assistant Commissioner of Police Marc E said, “The officers involved worked round-the-clock and were determined to bring those responsible to justice. The Police take a very serious view of any act of violence, especially acts of planned or organised violence. We will not hesitate to take firm action against such perpetrators.”
