The Police are investigating a 57-year-old man for allegedly providing false information to a public servant.
On 5 February 2022 at about 3.20pm, the Police were alerted by the man to an alleged case of armed robbery with hurt. The man claimed that two unknown men had entered his unit and robbed him of $600 at knife point. He also claimed that the duo had injured him with the knife during the incident, before they fled from the unit on foot.
During the course of investigations, officers from Tanglin Police Division detected several inconsistencies between the man’s account and Police camera footages obtained by the officers. Investigations revealed that the man had purportedly provided false information to the Police and was not a victim of the reported crime.
Police investigations against the man are ongoing. The offence of giving any information which a person knows to be false to a public servant carries an imprisonment term which may extend to two years, a fine, or both.
The Police would like to remind members of the public that police resources can be put to better use to deal with real crimes and emergencies than investigating into false reports or false information. Those who lodge false police reports or provide false information will face serious consequences under the law.
