The Police have arrested a 26-year-old man for his suspected involvement in relation to a case of cheating.

Background of Incident

On 8 February 2022 at about 4.40pm, the Police received a report of a case of cheating at Sengkang Square. The victim, a 28-year-old man, had posted online to sell his luxury watch for $35,000. A man had replied to the victim’s posting and met the victim subsequently at Sengkang Square. After inspecting the victim’s watch, the man decided not to proceed with the purchase and allegedly returned a similar watch to the victim. Upon returning home, the victim realised that the man had returned a different watch, bearing a different serial number, which was believed to be a counterfeit.

An operation involving officers from Ang Mo Kio Police Division, Police Operations Command Centre (POCC) and Police Intelligence Department (PID), was immediately mounted to trace the suspect. Through investigations, the identity of the 26-year-old man was established.

On 9 February 2022 at about 3.15pm, officers from Ang Mo Kio Police Division spotted the 26-year-old man in a car in the vicinity of Yishun Ring Road. When the officers engaged the man in an open carpark and instructed him to step out of the car, he allegedly ignored the officers’ instructions, attempted to hit an officer using his car and sped off. One of the officers managed to move away to avoid being knocked down by the car.

Through extensive ground enquiries, the man was spotted at Ang Mo Kio Ave 3 later in the day, and officers from Ang Mo Kio Police Division subsequently arrested the man.

Offences

The man will be charged in court on 11 February 2022 with the offence of cheating, punishable under Section 420 of the Penal Code 1871. If convicted, he will be liable to an imprisonment term of up to ten years and a fine.

In addition, the man is being investigated for the offence of rash act under Section 336(a) of the Penal Code 1871 and Driving Under Disqualification under Section 43(4) of the Road Traffic Act 1961. The respective offences carry an imprisonment term of up to six months, a fine of up to $2,500, or both; and an imprisonment term of up to three years, and a fine of up $10,000, or both.
