The Police are investigating five men, aged between 64 and 86, for their suspected involvement in illegal horse betting activities.
In an enforcement operation conducted on 12 March 2022, officers from Tanglin Police Division conducted raid along Whampoa Drive. During the operation, cash amounting to more than $3,000 was seized.
Preliminary investigations revealed that three of the men are believed to have been involved in roles as an illegal bookmaker and the remaining two are believed to have placed bets with the illegal bookmakers. Investigations against the five men are ongoing.
Under Section 5(1) of the Betting Act 1960, the offence of placing bets with a bookmaker carries a fine of up to $5,000, a jail term of up to six months, or both. The offence of being involved in bookmaking under Section 5(3)(a) of the Betting Act carries a fine of not less than $20,000 and not more than $200,000, and a jail term of up to five years.
The Police will continue to clamp down on criminal activities. Those found engaging in illegal betting activities will be dealt with sternly in accordance with the law.
