The Police have arrested a 26-year-old man for his suspected involvement in a series of Internet love scams.

Between 11 May 2021 and 13 May 2022, the Police received multiple reports from victims who were allegedly cheated by a man who developed a fictitious online persona and befriended them on various dating platforms. The man would purportedly cheat these victims by asking them to transfer a total of more than $31,000 for various purposes, such as the repayment of credit card bills and payment of his daily expenses.

Through follow-up investigations, officers from Bedok Police Division established the identity of the man and arrested him on 17 May 2022.

Police investigations are ongoing. The offence of cheating under Section 420 of the Penal Code carries an imprisonment term of up to 10 years and a fine.
