On 4 June 2022 at about 2.33am, the Police were alerted to a case of alleged assault along Cuff Road. Two male victims suffered laceration wounds and were conveyed to Tan Tock Seng Hospital.

Through ground enquiries and the aid of images from CCTV and Police cameras, officers from Central Police Division and Criminal Investigation Department established the identities of three men suspected to be involved in the alleged assault. On 4 and 7 June 2022, the Police arrested two of the men, aged 26 and 28, for the offence of voluntarily causing hurt by dangerous weapon with common intention under Section 324 read with Section 34 of the Penal Code 1871. The 26-year-old man was charged in court on 6 June 2022. His 28-year-old accomplice, who had allegedly used a knife to cause multiple lacerations to the victims, was charged in court on 9 June 2022 for the same offence.

During the arrest of the 28-year-old man, another 34-year-old man was also arrested for the offences of harbouring an offender under Section 212 of the Penal Code 1871, and possession of a scheduled weapon under Section 7(1) of the Corrosive, Explosive Substances and Offensive Weapons Act 1958. He was charged in court for the two offences on 9 June 2022.

The offence of voluntarily causing hurt by dangerous weapon under Section 324 of the Penal Code 1871 carries an imprisonment term of up to seven years, a fine, caning, or any combination of such punishments. Under Section 34 of the same Code, when a criminal act is done by several persons, in furtherance of the common intention of all, each of such persons is liable for that act in the same manner as if the act were done by him alone.

The offence of harbouring an offender carries an imprisonment term of up to one-fourth of the longest term of imprisonment provided for the predicate offence, or a fine, or with both. The offence of possession of a scheduled weapon carries an imprisonment for a term not exceeding five years, with caning of not less than six strokes; and in the case of a second or subsequent offence, to imprisonment for a term of not less than two years and not more than eight years, with caning of not less than six strokes.
