The Singapore Police Force (SPF) marks the 25th year since the pioneer Neighbourhood Police Centre (NPC), Queenstown NPC, was launched on 20 December 1997. As a mark of commemoration, Queenstown NPC held the Silver Jubilee celebrations at her compound in Queensway.
Silver Jubilee celebrations
Deputy Commissioner of Police (Policy), Jerry See (“DC Jerry See”), attended the celebrations as the Guest of Honour together with Commander of Clementi Police Division, Assistant Commissioner of Police Serene Chiu.
In his opening address, DC Jerry See reflected on the history of community policing in Singapore. On 1 June 1983, the SPF launched the Neighbourhood Police Post (NPP) system and cemented her move towards a proactive and community-based policing strategy. The introduction of the NPP system helped the Police to better fight crime and leverage community support in crime prevention and detection.
In 1997, the NPC system was introduced to better deal with a changing demographic, an evolving operational landscape and advances in technology. Each NPC served as a one-stop policing centre that aimed to integrate community and frontline policing while providing frontline policing services that were more accessible to the community. Queenstown NPC was the first NPC launched as part of this transformation and 20 December 1997 marks Queenstown NPC’s official inauguration.
Over the years, Queenstown NPC has built strong community partnership and volunteerism in keeping Singapore safe and secure. Continuing her strong tradition of community engagement, Queenstown NPC took the opportunity to recognise partners and volunteers during the Silver Jubilee celebrations. Tokens of appreciation were presented to a retiring Citizens on Patrol (COP) volunteer of six years, Ms Mary Chan as well as to the Chairmen of Queenstown, Buona Vista, Ulu Pandan and Telok Blangah Citizens’ Consultative Committees (CCC).
The SPF has various volunteer schemes which provides a variety of roles for members of the public to contribute their efforts in keeping Singapore safe and secure.
