In a ceremony held at Central Police Division on 27 April 2023, two members of the public were commended for their public spiritedness in assisting the Police in two separate cases.
In the first case, on 23 October 2022, Mr Tan Tjoa Teng (“Mr Tan”) was in a lift when he noticed a man sitting on the ledge of a HDB parapet through the lift’s door panel. Mr Tan immediately exited the lift and managed to pull the man safely away from the ledge. During their conversation, the man told Mr Tan that he had wanted to end his life. The man was subsequently handed over to the Police unharmed.
In the second case, on 11 April 2023 at about 0230hrs, Mr Muhammed Shahadan Bin Sharom (“Mr Shahadan”) was in the vicinity of Stamford Road on his way to make a delivery when he spotted a man attacking an elderly man. Mr Shahadan shouted at the man and tried all means to break up the fight. The man then walked away and retrieved an axe from a bag. Mr Shahadan continued to provide valuable information to the Police. Police officers responding to the incident then spotted the man holding an axe at a traffic light junction and placed him under arrest.
Commander of Central Police Division, Assistant Commissioner of Police (AC) Jeremy Ang, said “We thank these two individuals for their strong sense of public spiritedness and concern for the safety of others. In both cases, they stepped forward at personal risk and helped others who were caught in a perilous situation. Their selfless actions are highly commendable. On the case of the axe-wielding man, the Police take a serious view towards any acts of violence that threaten public safety. Our officers face dangerous situations in the course of our duty and are trained to use necessary and proportionate force to decisively resolve the situation.”
