The Police have arrested a woman and two men, aged between 30 and 38, for their suspected involvement in a case of loanshark harassment.

On 6 July 2023, the Police were alerted to a case of loanshark harassment along Tampines Street 83 where two residential units were splashed with red paint and secured with a bicycle lock. A debtor’s note was also pasted on the wall of the lift lobby. Through ground enquiries and with the aid of images from Police cameras, officers from Bedok Police Division established the identities of the trio and arrested them on 7 July 2023. Two mobile phones were seized as case exhibits.

Preliminary investigations revealed that the trio were allegedly involved in other similar cases of loanshark harassments.

The 30-year-old woman and the 38-year-old man will be charged in court on 8 July 2023. Police investigations against the 32-year-old man are ongoing. Under the Moneylenders Act 2008, first-time offenders found guilty of loanshark harassment shall be punished with imprisonment of up to five years, a fine between $5,000 and $50,000, and caning of up to six strokes.

The Police have zero tolerance against loanshark harassment activities. Those who deliberately cause annoyance and disruption to public safety and security, will be dealt with severely in accordance with the law.

Members of the public are advised to stay away from loansharks and not to work with or assist them in any way.  The public can call the Police at ‘999’ or the X-Ah Long hotline at 1800-924-5664 if they suspect or know of anyone who could be involved in loansharking activities.
