The Police have arrested a 29-year-old man for his suspected involvement in a case of cheating.

On 15 August 2023 at about 4.20pm, the Police received a report from a victim who claimed that she got to know a man via a social dating application. They soon developed a romantic relationship. The man then introduced the victim to investment and asked for money on the pretext of investing and generating good returns. Since June 2023, the victim made multiple transactions to the man amounting to about $400,000. However, the man then became uncontactable.

Through follow-up investigations, officers from Central Police Division established the man’s identity and arrested him on 17 August 2023. His bank accounts and trading accounts were frozen. An electronic device was also seized for the purpose of investigation.

Police investigations are ongoing. The offence of cheating under Section 420 of the Penal Code 1871, carries an imprisonment term up to 10 years and a fine.

The Police have zero tolerance towards such criminal acts. The Police will not hesitate to take action against those who blatantly disregard the law.
