On 23 January 2024 at about 9.15pm, the Police were alerted to a case of assault at Block 462 Sembawang Drive. When Police officers arrived at the location, the man barricaded himself inside a residential unit together with a 52-year-old woman.
As it was assessed that the man might pose a danger to himself and to others, officers from the Crisis Negotiation Unit (CNU), Special Operations Command (SOC) and Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) also responded to the incident.
After about three hours of negotiation by CNU officers, the Police saw an opportunity to breach the unit when they observed that the woman went to the toilet, thus buying them time to ensure her safety.
