The Police have arrested two men, aged 20 and 24, for their suspected involvement in two separate cases of loanshark harassment.
On 28 February 2024, the Police were alerted to a case of loanshark harassment at a residential unit along Canberra Street, where blue paint was splashed at the main door and gate.
Through ground enquiries and with the aid of images from Police cameras, officers from Woodlands Police Division and Bedok Police Division established the identity of the 24-year-old man and arrested him on 29 February 2024 at the vicinity of King George Avenue. Preliminary investigations revealed that the man is allegedly involved in other similar cases of loanshark harassment islandwide.
In the second case, the Police were alerted on 29 February 2024 to a case of loanshark harassment at a residential unit along Yishun Avenue 4, where red and yellow paint were splashed at the main door and gate. A bicycle lock was fastened to the main gate and a debtor’s note was pasted on the main door.
Through ground enquiries and with the aid of images from Police cameras, officers from Woodlands Police Division established the identity of the 20-year-old man and arrested him on 1 March 2024 at the vicinity of Woodlands Central. Preliminary investigations revealed that the man is allegedly involved in another case of loanshark harassment at Jurong West Central 1.
Both men will be charged in court on 2 March 2024 under the Moneylenders Act 2008. For first time offenders, the offence of loanshark harassment carries a fine between $5,000 and $50,000, with imprisonment of up to five years, and caning of up to six strokes.
The Police have zero tolerance against loanshark harassment activities. Those who deliberately vandalise properties, cause annoyance and disruption to public safety, peace and security, will be dealt with severely in accordance with the law.
Members of the public are advised to stay away from loansharks and not to work with or assist them in any way. The public can call the Police at ‘999’ or the X-Ah Long hotline at 1800-924-5664 if they suspect or know of anyone who could be involved in loansharking activities.
