A 30-year-old man will be charged in court on 4 June 2024 for allegedly using criminal force to deter a public servant from discharge of his duty.

On 7 April 2024 at about 1.20 am, officers from Central Police Division were carrying out anti-crime rounds along Victoria Street. The Police officers spotted a man and wanted to conduct checks on him. One of the officers made his intention known to the man after identifying himself with a warrant card.

The man then allegedly grabbed on the officer’s shirt and necklace abruptly. As a result of his action, the Police officer sustained some friction burns and red marks around his neck. The man was arrested on the spot.

The offence of using criminal force to deter a public servant from discharge of his duty under Section 353 of the Penal Code 1871  carries an imprisonment term of up to four years,  a fine, or both.

The Police have zero tolerance towards such acts of violence against public servants who are carrying out their duties and will not hesitate to take action against those who blatantly disregard the law.
