The Police have arrested a 24-year-old man for his suspected involvement in a case of snatch theft.
On 11 June 2024 at 10.37pm, the Police were alerted to a case of snatch theft along Buffalo Road, where a 65-year-old female victim’s gold chain, valued approximately at $800, was purportedly snatched by an unknown man. No injuries were reported.
Through ground enquiries and close coordination with the Police Operations Command Centre, officers from Central Police Division established the identity of the man and arrested him within an hour of the report. Preliminary investigations revealed that the man was also believed to be involved in another case of theft along Kerbau Road on the same day. The gold chain, and a handphone, were recovered and seized as case exhibits.
The man will be charged in court on 13 June 2024 with the offence of Criminal Force in Committing Theft of Property Carried by a Person under Section 356 of the Penal Code 1871. The offence carries an imprisonment term of not less than one year and not more than seven years and caning. The offence of Theft under Sec 379 of the Penal Code 1871 carries an imprisonment for a term of up to three years, a fine or both.
The Police will not tolerate such brazen acts of crime and will spare no effort to apprehend such offenders and deal with them in accordance with the law. When confronted with snatch theft, members of the public are advised to remain calm, take note of the physical appearance and distinctive features of the perpetrator, and call for the Police as soon as possible.
