The Police have arrested a 70-year-old woman, who is believed to be involved in a series of pickpocketing cases at a market and food centre along Yishun Ring Road.
Between 24 July 2023 to 13 June 2024, the Police received several reports from victims stating that their wallets were purportedly missing in the vicinity of Yishun Ring Road.
Through ground enquiries and with the aid of images from CCTV and Police cameras, officers from Woodlands Police Division established the identity of the woman and arrested her on 15 June 2024.
Preliminary investigations revealed that the woman allegedly picked wallets from victims who had their bags unzipped, took out the cash and subsequently disposed the wallets in the nearby vicinity. The woman is also believed to be involved in other similar offences.
The woman will be charged in court on 17 June 2024 with the offence of Theft under Section 379 of the Penal Code 1871, which carries an imprisonment term of up to three years, a fine, or both.
Members of the public are advised to safeguard their belongings and be vigilant against pickpockets. The Police would like to remind the public to adopt the following crime prevention measures:
- Look after your belongings at all times;
- Be cautious when approached by strangers who try to get very close to you;
- Avoid carrying large amounts of cash or wearing excessive jewellery to crowded places;
- Ensure your bag is closed at all times and sling it in front of you;
- Avoid placing your wallet in your back pocket; and
- Dial ‘999’ for urgent assistance
