The Police have arrested a 45-year-old man for his suspected involvement in a case of assisting unlicensed moneylending business.
On 24 June 2024 at about 10.10pm, the Police were alerted to a case of loanshark harassment at a residential unit along Yishun Avenue 9. The man was seen taking photographs of a residential unit. He was subsequently confronted by the house occupant, who was notified of the man’s presence by his CCTV, at the void deck. When the house occupant called for police, the man attempted to flee but was held back by the house occupant with the assistance of his family members. An off-duty Police officer saw the commotion and rendered assistance to detain the man. A mobile phone was seized as case exhibit.
Preliminary investigations revealed that the man had assisted loanshark to take photographs of the residential unit, which would be used by loanshark to commit harassment against the debtor. The man is also allegedly involved in other similar cases of assisting loanshark.
The man will be charged in court on 26 June 2024 under the Moneylenders Act 2008. For first-time offenders, the offence of assisting unlicensed moneylending business carries a fine of not less than $30,000 and not more than $300,000 and with imprisonment for a term not exceeding 4 years.
The Police have zero tolerance against loanshark harassment activities. Those who deliberately vandalise properties, cause annoyance or disrupt public safety, peace and security, will be dealt with severely in accordance with the law.
