The Police are investigating nine men and one woman, aged between 22 and 71, for their suspected involvement in a case of conspiracy to commit cheating involving telecommunications fraud. The persons are believed to be involved in receiving criminal proceeds of more than $200,000.
On 11 June 2024 at about 6.10am, the Police were alerted to a road traffic accident along Yishun Avenue 11 involving a car and a van. While attending to the accident, officers discovered 125 SIM cards from multiple mobile service providers in the car. Both the car driver and his passenger were arrested at the scene.
Through follow-up investigations, officers from Woodlands Police Division uncovered a fraud scheme which involved the forgery of business registration profiles. The persons would allegedly use these profiles to apply for mobile plans and the corresponding mobile phones. They would then sell the mobile phones for profit and retain the SIM cards for other illicit purposes.
Two men, aged 22 and 29, have been charged with an offence of fraudulent possession of properties under Section 35(1) of the Miscellaneous Offences (Public Order and Nuisance) Act 1906. The offence carries an imprisonment term of up to one year, a fine of up to $3,000, or both. Two other men, aged 33 and 46, have been charged with conspiracy to commit cheating under Section 420 read with Section 109 of the Penal Code 1871. The offence carries an imprisonment term of up to 10 years and a fine. The remaining six persons, aged between 37 and 71, are assisting with Police investigations.
The Police takes a serious stance against any person who may be involved in a conspiracy to defraud or cause wrongful loss to businesses.
