The Police have arrested a 35-year-old man, for his suspected involvement in using a found credit card to make unauthorised retail purchases.

On 24 August 2024, the Police received a report from a victim who discovered several unauthorised transactions had been made with his missing credit card.

Through follow up investigations, officers from Ang Mo Kio Police Division established the identity of the man and arrested him on 17 September 2024. Preliminary investigations revealed that the man is believed to have found the victim’s credit card, and later allegedly used it to make unauthorised transactions amounting to more than $700.

The man will be charged in court on 18 September 2024 with the offence of cheating under Section 420 of the Penal Code 1871, which is punishable with an imprisonment term of up to 10 years, and a fine.

The Police would like to remind members of the public that unauthorised use of another person’s credit/debit card information is a serious offence and take a serious view against any person who commits fraud. Perpetrators will be dealt with in accordance with the law.

The Police would like to advise all credit and debit card holders to adopt the following crime prevention measures:

  • Opt in for SMS OTP verification for purchases or charges to your credit / debit cards;

  • Opt for an SMS notification to be sent to your handphone for any charges incurred on your credit / debit card; and

  • Check the bank statements regularly and alert the bank immediately should there be any discrepancies or unauthorised charges discovered.
