On 18 September 2024, Woodlands Police Division presented the Public Spiritedness Award to two members of the public for assisting the Police in the rescue of an elderly man who was found sitting on the ledge of a HDB block along Yishun Ring Road.
On 5 September 2024, Mr Chua Lee Koon (“Mr Chua”) was making deliveries when he spotted an elderly man sitting on the 10th floor ledge of a HDB block along Yishun Ring Road. Upon noticing the elderly man, Mr Chua immediately shouted for the man to come down to safety, but he remained seated. This prompted Mr Chua to call for the Police. Mr Saride Venkata Kasi Viswanadh (“Mr Venkata Kasi”) was at his home when he heard Mr Chua shouting for help. He then went out of his unit and spotted the elderly man sitting on the ledge. Mr Venkata Kasi then went over to the said block and tried to persuade the elderly man to come down from the ledge. When Police arrived, both Mr Chua and Mr Venkata Kasi assisted the Police in rescuing the elderly man from his dangerous position on the ledge. The elderly man was safely brought back into the building.
Assistant Commissioner of Police Ang Eng Seng, Commander of Woodlands Police Division said, “We are privileged to present the Public Spiritedness Award to Mr Chua and Mr Venkata Kasi today. Both Mr Chua and Mr Venkata Kasi played an important role in the rescue effort and their selflessness and public-spiritedness are commendable. Their actions are an example of how members of the public can step forward to assist the Police. We hope that their act will serve to inspire others to keep the community safe.”
