The Police have arrested three men, aged between 20 and 27, for their suspected involvement in a case of loanshark harassment.

On 5 October 2024 at about 2.40am, the Police were alerted to a case of loanshark harassment at a residential unit along Circuit Road, where the unit was splashed with brown paint, and a debtor’s note was left behind.

Through follow-up investigations and with the aid of images from Police cameras, officers from Bedok Police Division established the identities of the three men and arrested them on 7 October 2024. Preliminary investigations revealed that the three men are believed to be involved in other cases of loanshark harassment island-wide. Three mobile phones were seized as case exhibits.

Two men, aged 20 and 26, will be charged in court on 8 October 2024 under the Moneylenders Act 2008. For first-time offenders, the offence of loanshark harassment carries a fine between $5000 and $50,000, with imprisonment of up to five years, and caning of up to six strokes.

Police investigations are ongoing for the remaining 27-year-old man.

The Police have zero tolerance for loanshark harassment activities. Those who deliberately vandalise properties, cause annoyance and disruption to public safety and security, will be dealt with severely in accordance with the law.

Members of the public are advised to stay away from loansharks and not work with or assist them in any way. The public can call the Police at ‘999’ if they suspect or know of anyone who could be involved in loansharking activities.
